Thank you all for helping me continue to work toward a very important goal I set for our collies when I retired from teaching and began herding in mid-2004! I am determined that we be one of the models for the collie fancy that fragmenting the collie into show lines and performance lines is NOT the way to go. Collies can be beautiful, healthy, intelligent, AND do the work they were intended to do as herding dogs!!!

AHBA News from Berryville, VA

Blog Entry on Wednesday

AHBA Herding News from Berryville, VA:

Claire & I made another trip to Berryville for American Herding Breeds Association Trials Aug. 30 & 31. We 25 ducks with us… Claire provided the ducks for Arena Course Runs. We got what were supposed to be vanilla air fresheners for my van, but they smelled oddly like bazooka. Ahh, the aroma of ducks and bubble gum on a 6 to 7 hour drive!!!

Claire ran Kess, her sable sheltie girl, & Dean, her Catahoola Leopard Dog, on ducks and Joy and Wiggy for me on ducks. Wiggy & Dean each got an HTAD level 2 Q on ducks. Joy and Kess earned Q’s each day and earned their HTAD level 3 titles on ducks.

Joy & Kess both ran in level 3 HTAD sheep and level 3 HRD (ranch) sheep. They both have these titles, so we were going for championship points. For the weekend, Kess earned 2 pts. and Joy 4 pts. Joy needs 4 more points to complete her HTCH (Herding Trial Championship)! Kess also ran one day in HTD level 2 (large pasture) and earned a Q and 1st place.

Wendy Lamp’s smooth blue girl Powder and Irene Meire’s smooth sable girl Prada both earned their Junior Herding Dog titles with very pretty runs. Claire did a terrific and Herculean job showing all of these guys for two days of trials. She put 4 new titles on our entries: Prada JHD, Powder JHD, Kess HTADIIId & Joy HTADIIId.
Claire’s Kess earned one 1st & two 3rd placements and Dean one 2nd place. Joy earned two 2nd place awards and a 3rd. Wiggy earned a 1st place. Joy won two beautiful & colorful rosettes for High Scoring Collie – one each day. We earned a total of 6 championship points. It was a very good weekend plus we got to see many old friends and make some new ones – even a new collie herding friend, Charlotte Holtzman and her lovely sable merle rough girl.

Just a few photos:

AKC Herding Trial News – Gladys, VA – Sept. 6 & 7, 2008

Blog Entry on Tuesday

We had a successful weekend at Breezy Hill Farm this weekend where we were entered on cattle in trial classes and ducks in PT classes. In spite of the heavy rain and wind Sat. a.m. our CH Bo-Dandy’s Itsawig CD, RE, HSAs, HRD1, HTAD1, RLF1 earned a 1st Q on Started cattle on her first try with a 5th place in a class of 10 entries. She did exactly the same the next day in better weather conditions. So Wiggy now has two of the three needed Started legs to have her 1st cow title. Wiggy below taking the cows through the Y-chute.

Joy gave Advanced cattle her best shot, but after being grazed by a hoof and challenged by the same cow several times, she took so much time trying to discipline him that she couldn’t finish the course. I’m moving her back a class on our next cattle events to get her confidence up on cows. She and Wiggy had only worked two pretty nice calves on 3 occasions prior to these trials, so I was proud of them both!
CH Deep River’s Comfort and Joy RN, HXAsd, HRDIIIs, HTADIIIsd, RLF1

Wendy’s Powder, Pam’s Valerie & Irene’s Prada were real troopers for Claire on PT ducks. Claire is an excellent handler with ducks, a good thing, since these were very tough ducks for beginner dogs. We were the only 3 duck entries aside from one Started A run, and we quickly figured out why no one else entered! Claire managed 5 Q’s in two days on these difficult groups, so Powder earned one PT Q, and Valerie and Prada 2 Q’s to get their PT titles. Powder had the misfortune of having a group on Sun. that would absolutely not run the course no matter what Claire and Powder tried to do to whip them into line!
Powder
Deep River’s Reflexion in Snow JHD (12 points in conformation)

Valerie

Prada

Claire’s sheltie, Kess, got two Started cattle Q’s with a 1st (High Scoring on cattle Sat.) and a 3rd on Sun.!Claire also piloted Pat Sanford’s Nari (sheltie bred by Claire) to her 1st two Started cattle Q’s.

Great Weekend in Greenville, SC

Blog Entry on Monday

It was a terrific weekend for Deep River Collies in Greenville, SC this past weekend, July 25-27.

On Fri. at the Greenville KC show, Deep River’s Reflexion In Snow (Powder) was smooth WB & BOW for a 4 pt. major, shown by Dona Williams. Congratulations to Powder’s owner Wendy Lamp and co-breeder Pam Brown. Powder needs a major to finish. Deep River’s Jake ‘O Lantern was RD to the 4 pt. major in smooth dogs from the 6 to 9 month class -owner handled. Our rough boy Deep River Younghaven Alliance (pictured below under Puppy News) was RD in roughs. CH Deep River’s Bow and Arrow (Scout)was BOV smooth – shown by Dona Williams.

On Sat. at the Spartanburg KC show, Deep River’s Winter Shadows (Snow) was smooth WB & BOW for a 4 pt. major from BBE class – shown by yours truly. Congratulations to Snow’s owner Irene Meier and co-breeders Mike & Tucky Vaughan. This was Snow’s first show weekend. Scout was smooth BOV.

On Sun. at the Hendersonville KC show, Deep River Ironhill Dark Victory (Bogie) was breeder handled to WD for 4 pts. Congratulations to Bogie’s owners Yvonne Shelton & Robin Perry! Scout was again BOV. Because the smooth entries were large ones for all-breed shows, Scout got a very respectable 51 Hawkins points (CCA Top 10 system) for the weekend! In roughs our Felicia – Jag-View’s Beyond A Glance (pictured below under Puppy News) was WB for a 4 pt. major – shown by Dona Williams. Felicia needs a major to finish.

Herding Weekend Re-Cap!

Blog Entry on Tuesday

Berryville, VA July 11, 12 & 13 Keepsake Farm AHBA herding trials… My friend Claire and I went to VA this past weekend for American Herding Breeds Association trials. There were a few baubles but overall a highly successful weekend! Claire’s sheltie, Kess, earned her HRD 3 title (Ranch Dog – Advanced). Our Joy also earned her HRD 3 title as well as her HTAD 3 (Arena Dog – Advanced) title. Joy’s scores were high enough in Level 3 to earn her 2 pts. toward her AHBA Herding Championship! Joy also earned her HTD 1 title (similar to AKC Started B Course). She also earned 3 class placements.

Mike & Tucky Vaughn’s Kate earned her HTAD 1 title. Pam Brown’s Ariel earned a Q and 4th place in HTAD 1 on Sat. Pam’s Valerie earned a JHD (Junior Herding Dog) title similar to AKC PT title. Irene Meire’s Prada earned one Q toward her JHD as did Wendy Lamp’s Powder. Alas, Peggy Moorman’s Stryker did very well on Sun., but the judge did not agree with our thoughts on this. In fact, only one JHD entry earned a JHD Q on Sun. – Valerie. Since Valerie did a near perfect run, it would have been very difficult not to pass her performance! We were puzzled by that particular judge’s approach and believe that either of the other two judges would have passed both Stryker and Powder that day also! Powder actually did a better job the day she didn’t Q than the day she did!

There are quite a few posts in this series so take your time and enjoy!
